What this order covers
Ford Codes List is a free, no-sign-up lookup for the codes a Ford, Lincoln or Mercury sets on top of the generic standard. The powertrain half is Ford-only: DPFE and EGR feedback, PATS anti-theft, IMRC intake runners, fuel pump driver modules, ignition and misfire control, and transmission control codes. The rest is body, chassis and network faults.
Each line explains what the code means on Ford, Lincoln and Mercury vehicles, how serious it is, what usually causes it, and a safe order of steps to check and fix it.
How Ford codes work
Ford vehicles run two layers of diagnostics. Generic P0xxx codes are the SAE standard every automaker shares. Ford-enhanced codes cover Ford-only systems and the body, chassis and network faults the generic standard leaves to the maker. This order covers the enhanced layer.
On any 1996-or-newer Ford, Lincoln or Mercury, pull codes through the diagnostic connector under the dash. Ford also runs KOEO and KOER self-tests that sweep actuators the generic mode never touches. Some Ford codes only set during those tests, so a plain code read can miss them.
How to use this sheet
- Pull the code. Connect an OBD-II scanner, run a KOEO self-test, and note the Ford-enhanced codes alongside any generic P0xxx codes.
- Look it up. Enter the full code, or a word like “misfire” or “fuel pump”, in the lookup box at the top of the page.
- Check Ford patterns. Every line lists the failures these codes show most on F-150, Super Duty, Mustang and Explorer.
- Diagnose before you spend. Follow the steps and confirm with live data before replacing parts.
Common concerns, Ford
A few patterns cause most Ford check-engine lights.
- P1000 OBD-II Monitor Testing Incomplete. Battery was recently disconnected or went dead, clearing monitor history.
- P1131 Lack of Upstream HO2S Switch - Sensor Indicates Lean (Bank 1). Vacuum leak in the bank 1 intake tract (PCV hose and elbow are classic failure points).
- P1233 Fuel Pump Driver Module Off-Line. Corroded fuel pump driver module. The 2004-2008 F-150 mounts it on the rear crossmember where road salt destroys it.
- P1299 Cylinder Head Over-Temperature Protection Active. Low coolant level from a leak in a hose, the radiator or the water pump.
